Dream Story

Arthur Schnitzler · 1926 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

Home from a Viennese masked ball at which each was approached by a stranger, a doctor and his wife trade confessions of desire that neither acted on. Stung by hers, he spends the night walking the city, and a chance meeting with an old fellow student hands him the password to a masked gathering in a villa outside town. Schnitzler's last major prose work pushes the erotic double life of his Vienna towards hallucination.
