After a Christmas party, a Manhattan doctor's wife tells him about a naval officer she once wanted enough to leave him for, and he walks out into two nights of half-taken opportunities that end at a masked gathering in a country house where he has no business being. Every encounter stops just short. Kubrick shot for over four hundred days and died within a week of delivering the cut.
