The 39 Steps
A Canadian at a London music hall takes home a frightened woman who talks about a spy ring, wakes to find her dead with a map of Scotland in her hand, and goes north handcuffed by circumstance and then literally to a stranger who believes none of it. Hitchcock cuts a landlady's scream into a train whistle and hides the secret in a memory act. The chase structure and the wronged-man premise became his shape for decades.
