Free Solo
Alex Honnold spends two years preparing to climb three thousand feet of El Capitan without a rope, memorising the Freerider route pitch by pitch on lines, while a crew of climbers who are his friends work out where to hang cameras on a wall he may fall past. The directors put their own problem inside the picture: whether a man deciding how much risk to take can decide it honestly while being filmed. It took the Academy Award for documentary feature and set the commercial ceiling for the form.
