Reverend John Ames, an old Congregationalist minister in Gilead, Iowa in 1956, knows his heart is failing and writes a long letter to his seven-year-old son. He recounts three generations of preachers, and the troubling return of his namesake godson, Jack Boughton. Robinson's first novel in twenty-four years won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize.
