A man ruined by his own obsessions returns to Jinmachi, in Yamagata, where he is drawn into coaching a children's play. The short novel is narrated in a flat, self-lacerating voice. It won the 132nd Akutagawa Prize and is part of Abe's Jinmachi cycle.
