Snow
Orhan Pamuk · 2002 CE · Novel · Turkish · Contemporary
Ka, a poet long exiled in Germany, travels to the Turkish border city of Kars as a journalist to report on a run of suicides among girls forbidden to wear headscarves. Cut off from the outside by snow, he is drawn into a clash among Islamists, secularists and Kurdish nationalists, and into a coup staged in the town theatre. Pamuk called it his first and only political novel; it was one of the books singled out when he won the Nobel Prize in 2006.
