The Shipyard

Juan Carlos Onetti · 1961 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Larsen comes back to Santa María five years after the town expelled him and takes the post of general manager at Jeremías Petrus's shipyard, a rusting riverside yard with no ships, no orders and two remaining employees who go on drawing up plans and inventories for it. He accepts a salary that will never be paid, sells machinery off for scrap, and courts the owner's addled daughter across the ruined grounds. Onetti's bleakest work and the centre of the Santa María cycle, set in the invented county he had built a decade earlier on Faulkner's model.
