Judith
An Assyrian general drinks himself insensible at his own feast and has the Hebrew widow he has been pursuing carried to his tent by his retainers, who then withdraw and bar the door. She takes his sword. The surviving fragment recasts the deuterocanonical Book of Judith as Old English battle verse, in the same alliterative line and the same manuscript as Beowulf.
