Mother of 1084

Mahasweta Devi · 1974 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

Two years after a telephone call sent her to a Calcutta morgue to identify her youngest son as body number 1084, Sujata spends the day of her daughter's engagement party visiting the people who knew him as a comrade rather than as a boy, because her own family has agreed never to mention him. The household made its peace with the police account at once, and the evening's arrangements carry on around her. Mahasweta Devi's novel of the Naxalite years is the work through which she is most often read in English, and Govind Nihalani filmed it.
