Of Human Bondage
Orphaned and born with a clubfoot, Philip Carey is raised by a clergyman uncle in Kent, gives up a Heidelberg education and then a Paris studio, and settles into medical training in London. There he attaches himself to a waitress who is indifferent to him and goes back to her each time she leaves. Maugham's largely autobiographical account of a young man's successive infatuations, with art, with belief and with one woman, is the book on which his standing rests.
