Of Human Bondage

John Cromwell · 1934 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

A medical student with a club foot and an abandoned try at painting fixes on a Cockney waitress who is bored by him, takes her back after each desertion, and pays for it in money, examinations and self-respect. Cromwell shoots the London rooms tight and lets Bette Davis play contempt without softening it for sympathy. Her work in a loaned-out part forced a write-in campaign at the Academy and changed the balloting rules.
