Secrets & Lies

Mike Leigh · 1996 CE · Film · English · Contemporary

A Black optometrist in London buries her adoptive mother and applies for her birth records, which name a white factory worker in Holloway living badly with a grown daughter who despises her. A first meeting in a café goes better than either expects; a barbecue at her brother's new house does not. Leigh built the parts through months of improvisation with the cast, and took the Palme d'Or with it.
