Sri Ramayana Darshanam

Kuvempu · 1949 CE · Poem · Indian · Contemporary

Valmiki's story of the exiled prince, the abducted queen and the crossing to Lanka is rebuilt in modern Kannada blank verse over two volumes and more than a decade, with Homeric simile brought into the language for the first time. Kuvempu reads the epic as a book about human beings rather than about divinity or caste, and where the older poem sends the queen alone into the fire to prove herself, here her husband walks into it beside her. The Jnanpith that made him the first Kannada laureate rests on it.
