A young recluse shut in his Tokyo flat believes a parasite in his body is steering him, while a young woman who drifts into his life and the pull of the internet draw him toward an outbreak of violence. The book follows the withdrawn and the damaged who live apart from ordinary social life. It won the Tanizaki Prize and set out the hikikomori figure that Murakami returned to in later work.
