The Anatomy of a Moment
On 23 February 1981 armed Civil Guards seized the Spanish parliament, and only three men stayed in their seats: Adolfo Suarez, General Gutierrez Mellado and Santiago Carrillo. Cercas rebuilds the coup from the film of it, frame by frame, and from testimony. He abandoned a novel to write it as fact, and it won the Premio Nacional de Narrativa.
