The Monkey's Straw Raincoat
Some four hundred single verses arranged by season and four linked sequences of thirty-six, gathered by Kyorai and Bonchō from the circle around Bashō at its height, opening with the first winter shower and the monkey who looks as though he too would like a little straw cape. The linked sequences are printed with each poet named turn by turn, so a reader can watch a subject handed on, refused, and picked up sideways. The school treated it as its own anthology, and later criticism has treated it as the point at which haikai stopped being wordplay.
