The Old Pond
An old pond; a frog jumps in; the sound of water. Seventeen syllables with no comparison, no allusion and no stated feeling, settled when the master kept his own opening phrase over the showier one a disciple proposed for the two lines already made. His school dated the beginning of his mature manner to this verse, and four centuries of commentary have not exhausted a poem a beginner can recite.
