The Sari Shop

Rupa Bajwa · 2004 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

Ramchand, a young assistant in an upmarket Amritsar sari shop, spends his days serving wealthy customers and his evenings in a cramped lodging. A book given to him wakens an ambition for something beyond servility, and the town's class lines answer. Bajwa's debut won the Sahitya Akademi Award for English in 2006.
