What Are Years

Marianne Moore · 1941 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

The title piece asks what our innocence is and what our guilt, answers that all are naked and none is safe, and finds its courage in a caged bird that keeps singing — he sees deep and is glad, who accedes to mortality. Around it an ostrich is defended against the men who eat its eggs, reindeer are herded across Alaska, and a paper nautilus guards eggs in a shell she will not leave. Written as the war began, in her counted syllabic stanzas.
