When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd
A lilac blooming perennial, a drooping star in the western sky and a shy hermit thrush withdrawn to the swamp are held together while a coffin travels night and day through cities draped in black. The mourner breaks a sprig for the coffin, goes into the swamp to hear the bird's carol, and sees in the long panorama the debris and the white skeletons of young men. Whitman's elegy for Lincoln, printed in a sequel to Drum-Taps.
