Crossing Brooklyn Ferry

Walt Whitman · 1856 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Romantic

A commuter on the East River ferry watches the flood tide, the gulls floating on motionless wings, the summer sky in the water and the foundry chimneys throwing flame on the housetops, then addresses the crowds who will make the same crossing generations after him. He tells them he too walked the streets of Manhattan and knew the dark patches and the evil he had confessed to nobody. Whitman's fullest claim on his future readers.
