Agnes Grey
A clergyman's daughter whose father has lost the family money in a speculation goes out as a governess, first to small children who torment animals and cannot be corrected, then to older girls in a colder house where her employers treat her as neither servant nor guest. She keeps her judgements to herself and records them exactly. Anne Brontë's first book, published in the same set as her sister's Wuthering Heights, and the plainest account in Victorian fiction of what governessing actually was.
