In Tehran an unemployed film enthusiast passes himself off as the director Mohsen Makhmalbaf to a middle-class family, promising to cast them in his next picture. Kiarostami hears of the arrest, gets a camera into the trial, and has everyone involved play themselves in reconstructions of what happened. The trial and the movie become one event.
