Double Indemnity

James M. Cain · 1936 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Walter Huff, calling on a client in the Hollywood hills to renew an automobile policy, finds only the wife at home and hears himself explaining the accident clause that pays double when a passenger dies falling from a train. He writes the policy, works out the death with her, and tells the whole business afterward in the flat shop-talk of a man who knows exactly how such claims get investigated. Cain took the bones of the Snyder-Gray case and set the pattern that American crime writing, and eight years later Billy Wilder, would work from.
