In a walled Chengdu compound in the early 1920s, three brothers of the Gao house live under a grandfather whose word arranges the marriages, ends the schooling and settles who may love whom. The eldest submits and pays for it, the second hesitates, the youngest reads the new Shanghai magazines and begins to plan his way out, and the bondmaids in the courtyard have no third option at all. Ba Jin's indictment of the Confucian household made him the most widely read novelist of the Republican period, and it opens his Turbulent Stream trilogy.
