Spring

Ba Jin · 1938 CE · Novel · Chinese · Modernist

In the Gao compound after the youngest brother has gone, a timid cousin is being fitted to a marriage arranged with a family known in the city for its cruelty, and the young women of the house begin to work out what an escape would actually cost. Letters from Shanghai keep arriving with a vocabulary the elders cannot confiscate. The middle volume of the Turbulent Stream trilogy moves the argument off the rebellious son and onto the daughters, who have far fewer exits.
