Life Is Beautiful

Roberto Benigni · 1997 CE · Film · Italian · Contemporary

A Jewish waiter in Arezzo wins a schoolteacher away from a fascist official through staged coincidences and stolen entrances; some years on he, their small son and his uncle are loaded onto a transport, and he tells the boy the camp is a contest with a tank for the winner. The mother boards the train after them. Playing the deportation as sustained comic invention took the Cannes jury prize and drew lasting objection.
