Lola

Jacques Demy · 1961 CE · Film · French · Contemporary

In the arcades and port streets of Nantes, a cabaret dancer raising a small son puts off every steady offer of love while she waits for the sailor who left seven years before, as chance keeps routing old friends and American servicemen through her orbit. Demy dedicated his first film to Max Ophüls and named its heroine after Lola Montès, neither of which is a source. It opens the linked world of his later musicals, and Roland Cassard, one of her suitors, walks on into The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.
