Man with a Movie Camera
A cameraman crosses an unnamed Soviet city from dawn to night, filming workers, machines, births, marriages and burials, while an editor at her bench cuts the very footage being watched. Split screens, freeze frames, reverse motion and a tripod that walks by itself declare every device rather than hide it. Vertov's Kino-Eye manifesto put into practice, and now routinely voted the greatest documentary ever made.
