Raven Steals the Light

Haida / Tlingit myth · c. 1700 CE · Myth / Legend · Pacific Northwest · Enlightenment

The world is dark because an old man keeps the sun, moon and stars boxed inside his house. Raven turns himself into a pine needle, is swallowed by the man's daughter, and is born as the grandchild who cries until the boxes are opened one by one. The trickster's theft is a gift; what he takes for himself he scatters for everyone.
