Rechnitz (The Exterminating Angel)

Elfriede Jelinek · 2008 CE · Play · German · Contemporary

Messengers, in the manner of Greek tragedy, report a party at Schloss Rechnitz in March 1945 whose guests shot some 180 Jewish forced labourers for entertainment. The speeches circle and distort what the Austrian bystanders and heirs will not say plainly. Premiered in Munich in 2008, by an Austrian Nobel laureate.
