A Los Angeles dress manufacturer two days from a fashion show cannot meet his payroll, and spends the morning arranging a hotel girl for a buyer and the afternoon listening to his partner explain how an arson would settle the books. Between meetings he drifts into memories of Anzio and the ballplayers of his boyhood. Lemmon took a scale wage to make it and won the Academy Award for the performance.
