Scaramouche
A young lawyer of unknown parentage watches a hot-headed friend goaded into a duel by an aristocrat famous for his blade, and swears to go on speaking the words that got the man killed. Hunted for sedition in the first months of the Revolution, he hides with a troupe of strolling players as the masked clown of the commedia, then in a Paris fencing academy, learning the trade he will need in the Assembly. Sabatini's most successful romance of 1789 opens with one of the best-known first lines in popular fiction and set the template for the Hollywood swashbuckler.
