The Tale of Hong Gildong

Heo Gyun (attrib.) · c. 1612 CE · Novel · Korean · Renaissance

The gifted son of a minister by a concubine may not address his father as father or his brother as brother, and the law shuts him out of the examinations that are the only road up. He leaves home, falls in with a band of mountain outlaws, renames them the Save-the-Poor party and begins relieving corrupt magistrates and fat monasteries of their grain, splitting himself into seven bodies whenever the government sends soldiers. The first Korean fiction written in the vernacular alphabet, and its case against the secondary-son laws is still quoted.
