Sunset Oasis

Bahaa Taher · 2007 CE · Novel · Arabic · Contemporary

In the 1890s an Egyptian police officer, a disillusioned veteran of the Urabi revolt, is sent as district governor to the remote Siwa oasis, accompanied by his Irish wife. Each chapter is voiced by a different character, and the oasis becomes a place where the empire's pressure and his own past cannot be avoided. It won the inaugural International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2008.
