The Gospel According to St. Matthew

Pier Paolo Pasolini · 1964 CE · Film · Italian · Contemporary

Matthew's text is spoken almost without addition by non-professionals cast out of Calabrian and Basilicatan villages, the Christ a Spanish economics student, the Virgin in old age played by Pasolini's own mother. It was shot among the stone towns of the Italian south with a handheld camera and scored from Bach to a Congolese Mass to Blind Willie Johnson. Made by an atheist and a Marxist, dedicated to John XXIII, and still the version the Church itself points to.
