Intolerance

D. W. Griffith · 1916 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

Four stories — a strike and a murder trial in modern America, the fall of Babylon, the passion in Judea, the Huguenot massacre — are cut against one another and bound by a shot of a woman rocking a cradle. The Babylon set stood several storeys high, the camera descending across it on a tracked balloon rig. Griffith's answer to the outcry over his previous feature, it ruined him and taught Soviet montage parallel cutting.
