A Romance of Happy Valley

D. W. Griffith · 1919 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

A Kentucky farm boy leaves his parents and his sweetheart for New York to make his fortune as an inventor of toys, while the farm goes to ruin behind him and his father slides toward a desperate remedy. Griffith shoots the valley in long unhurried takes and keeps the melodrama tethered to chores, porches and mud. A modest rural piece from his peak years, presumed lost for decades until a print surfaced in a Soviet archive.
