The Birth of a Nation

D. W. Griffith · 1915 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

Two families, one Northern and one Southern, are divided by secession, and the second half stages Reconstruction as Griffith wanted it seen: Black legislators as grotesques, hooded riders arriving as rescuers. The cross-cutting, the close-up and the mobile battlefield camera set the grammar of narrative cinema for a generation. Its craft and its racism are the same object, and it helped revive the Klan.
