The Housemaid

Kim Ki-young · 1960 CE · Film · Korean · Contemporary

A composer who teaches music at a textile factory hires a young housemaid for the two-storey home his family has strained to afford, and her entanglement with him turns the house into a trap closing on everyone inside it. Kim built the film from a newspaper scandal of the day, and its delirious domestic horror made it the touchstone of the Korean golden age — the ancestor Bong Joon-ho names for his own portraits of households devouring themselves.
