The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy

Laurence Sterne · 1759 CE · Novel · English · Enlightenment

Tristram sets out to write his own life and gets no further than the circumstances of his conception before the digressions take over. His father's theories, his uncle Toby's model fortifications, a midwife, a squashed nose and a great deal of black-lettered opinion crowd out the narrative for volumes at a time. The anti-novel two centuries early.
