The Nine Cloud Dream
A young monk on Lotus Peak, sent across a stone bridge on an errand for his master, meets eight fairy maidens there and cannot afterwards keep his mind on emptiness; disciplined for it, he wakes as Shao-yu, a boy of talent in Tang China. He rises through the examinations to general and chief minister and gathers, one at a time, eight women, a courtesan and two princesses and a swordswoman and a girl passing herself off as a ghost, most of them met under a disguise worn by one side or the other. Kim Man-jung wrote it in political exile, reportedly for his mother, and Korea has read it since as both the most sumptuous of its old romances and a Buddhist argument about what such sumptuousness is worth.
