The Saga of Grettir the Strong

Anonymous · c. 1320 CE · Novel · Norse / Germanic · Medieval

A difficult Icelandic boy who will do no work grows into the strongest man in the country and is outlawed twice for what that strength does. Hired to clear a haunted farm, he breaks the revenant Glam but takes a curse that leaves him afraid of the dark, a fatal condition for a man who must sleep outdoors. Its bout with the revenant and its dive behind a waterfall are the closest analogues found to Beowulf.
