Lorenzo de Tena, a Mexican astronomer, is followed from a boyhood in the 1920s through marriage, scientific ambition and political disappointment to the 1990s. The book is based on the life of Guillermo Haro, the astronomer who was the author's husband. It won the Premio Alfaguara and is the most sustained of Poniatowska's novels.
