The Sundial

Shirley Jackson · 1958 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

The Hallorans come back from a funeral to the great house the family money built, where an aunt announces that her dead father met her by the sundial with a message: the world ends shortly, and only those inside these walls come through. The household starts laying in tinned food and burning the library for shelf room, admitting a few outsiders on the strength of the prophecy. Jackson's coldest comedy, about people who would rather have the apocalypse than one another.
