We Have Always Lived in the Castle
Eighteen-year-old Merricat Blackwood walks to the village twice a week for groceries and library books, past neighbours who chant a rhyme at her, and home to the sister and the shaky old uncle who are all that is left. Six years ago most of the family died of arsenic at dinner, Constance was tried and acquitted, and Merricat keeps the grounds safe by burying objects and nailing books to trees. Jackson's last completed novel, written as she was herself becoming unable to leave her own house.
