The Tale of Peter Rabbit
A widowed rabbit sends her four children out for the morning with one instruction: not the garden, where their father ended in a pie. Three of them pick blackberries while Peter squeezes under the gate for lettuces and French beans, and is spotted by Mr McGregor with a rake. Potter printed it privately after the publishers refused it, and it became the model for the modern picture book.
