The Tunnel

Ernesto Sábato · 1948 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

A painter narrates from a cell how he fixed on the one visitor to his exhibition who stopped in front of the small window scene in the corner of a canvas everybody else walked past. He hunts her through Buenos Aires, learns she is María Iribarne and married to a blind man, and turns every hour she spends away from him into an interrogation. A landmark of Argentine existentialist fiction and the work by which Sábato is still chiefly read.
