The Unfinished
Reinhard Jirgl · 2003 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary
A Sudeten German family is expelled from Komotau in summer 1945 and resettled in East Germany, where three generations, led by a widow who clings to the dream of return, are never at home. The last part passes to first-person testimony. Jirgl's prose is known for its invented orthography and typographic marks; he received the Büchner Prize in 2010.
